Data Base from the IRS
Looking for a professional tax preparer? The IRS now publishes a directory.
Did you receive a suspicious phone message from "the IRS"?
You are not alone. If you received a message threatening collection or legal action, often from an 866 phone number, it is part of a long running scam. The message is intended to frighten you into calling back to supposedly prevent a lien from being placed on your property or bank accounts. The callers may have your correct name, address and phone number, but only because that is often easy to find public information. You can help the IRS find these people if you file an online complaint.
The IRS reminds taxpayers through newspaper articles and news shows that it first contacts taxpayers by mail. If you are concerned by a call or message you received, call me, or Google the phone number to read comments from others who received a similar call.
What are my household donations worth? If you itemize deductions, your charitable donations are tax deductible, including donations of clothing and household items in good condition. To deduct them you need a dated receipt from the charity together with your list of donated items. To determine the value of your deduction, here is a price guide from The Salvation Army.
IRS Adopts Taxpayer "Bill of Rights"
Taxpayer rights have always been part of the tax code, however IRS formalized this statement of rights in June 2014.
Do You Check Your Credit Report Annually? It is Free.
With security breaches becoming routine, go to Annual Credit Report.com. You are entitled to a free detailed report from any one or all three credit bureaus once per year. If you want to monitor your credit report without paying a fee, review one credit report every four months. Your credit score is not included with the reports but is available there for a small fee.
Credit scores are becoming available for free from several credit card companies. Citi provides it if you log into your credit card account. Bank of America and others will offer it sometime in 2015.
You can also sign up at Credit Karma to see how your credit is scored in different financial situations. The scoring is different than the score credit bureaus use, but I find the service helpful.
Affordable Care Act -- Income, Insurance and Tax Credit Calculator
If you applied for health insurance through the Affordable Care Act, you may have qualified for and used a subsidized rate. The rate depends on the number of people in your household (listed on your tax return) and your household's estimated 2015 modified adjusted gross income. The modified AGI is not the same as the income reported on your tax return. Contact me for a one page summary of income that is included in modified AGI.
When you file your 2015 tax return in 2016, your estimated income will be compared to your actual reported income. If your income is lower than expected, you will get some additional tax credit. If it is higher than expected, you will pay back some of the credit that subsidized your insurance premiums. Both the additional credit and the pay back will be included in the calculation of your 2015 federal tax return.
If you purchase an insurance policy through a Health Care Exchange you will receive a new tax document, Form 1095, that reports your coverage, premiums and tax credit. I am not able to prepare your tax return without this document.
The Registered Tax Return Preparer credential is not an endorsement by the IRS. It confirms to the public that competency was established through IRS examination and that a background check was satisfactorily completed. Continuing education is required to maintain the credential. In 2014 the IRS established requirements for a new voluntary program to recognize tax preparers committed to continuing education, the Annual Filing Season Program.

You can be too. Look for Non-GMO when you shop. Yes, I want my clients to live longer, healthier lives. The Monsanto Corporation mantra is "We Feed the World." It could read: "We feed the world genetically modified plants with a Roundup chaser." For more information go to http://www.nongmoproject.org/or watch this video trailer.
